GROUP 2 - TROPICAL RAINFOREST By: Ella Janice Mike and Nick

TROPICAL RAINFOREST

The tropical rainforest is a terrestrial biome. This biome can be found all around the world!

Some of the locations are:

  • Central America
  • South America
  • Western Africa
  • Madagascar
  • Zaire Basin
  • Indonesia
  • Malaysia
  • West Coast of India
  • South East Asia
  • Australia

CLIMATE:

Tropical rainforests are warm and it feels like summer all year long! The average temperature ranges from 70 - 85 degrees Fahrenheit. Humidity in this biome ranges from 77%-88%. There is a lot of rain. The yearly rainfall ranges from 80-400 inches.
FUN FACT: It can down pour in a rainforest as much as 2 inches in an hour!

Watch this interesting video on rain in the rainforest:

Soil Conditions in The Tropical Rainforest:

The soil in a tropical rainforest is very poor and infertile. Soil relies on the decomposition of dead organisms to recycle nutrients that plants need.

PLANTS:

  • Epiphytes such as mosses and ferns live on the surface of other plants
  • There are 10-20 different species of trees.
  • There are vines called LIANAS that are in a tropical rainforest.
  • Orchids along with other beautiful flowers

ANIMALS:

Did you know that the Rainforest is home to half of the animals species on earth!
Some of the animals and insects you may find in the tropical rainforest are:
  • butterflies
  • mosquitos
  • stick insects
  • monkeys
  • frogs
  • snakes
  • parrots
  • toucans

This video contains different animals you can see in the rainforest.

STATEN ISLAND VS. TROPICAL RAINFORESTEST

The tropical rainforest experience's one type of season all year round. Staten Island experience's all four seasons in one year. On Staten Island you do not see half of the animals that you can see in the rainforest. But, when it is summer we also see insects such as butterflies and mosquitos. Since Staten Island has a cold season we cannot see the same plants that are in the tropical rainforest. We live in a more Temperate Forest biome. Also, since we are an island we are  surrounded by an aquatic saltwater biome.

Welcome Biome Experts!

Welcome 6th Grade Biome Experts

Let us Review: Biomes are the worlds major communities made up of biotic (living) and abiotic (non-living) factors. Biomes are the homes of all different kinds of insects, animals, plants, and people that live in a certain type of climate.

(Watch this clip to go over some of the major biomes)

On this blog we will discuss the major biomes we have learned. There will be 6 groups and each group has been assigned a biome below:

GROUP 1: Artic Tundra- Matt, Dylan, Michelle, and Liz

GROUP 2: Tropical Rainforest- Ella, Janice, Nick, and Mike

GROUP 3: Temperate Forest- Jordan, Ashley, Nick, and Taylor

GROUP 4: Desert- Fran, Amanda, Anthony, and Danny

GROUP 5- Fresh Water - Eric, Mark, Nicole, and Pam

GROUP 6- Saltwater- Kristen, John, Sara, and Andrew

Here is what you have to do:
Answer the following questions
  1. State if your biome is either terrestrial or aquatic.
  2. Where in the world can you find your biome?
  3. What is the climate of your biome? Make sure to include the temperature, rainfall, and seasons that occur in your biome.
  4. What is your biome's soil conditions?
  5. What plants grow in your biome?
  6. What animals can be found in your biome?
  7. LASTLY, think about where you live. How is this biome similar to where you live? How is it different?

DO NOT FORGET:

  • Include different pictures of  your biome.

  • Include at least one video of your biome.

  • Have fun and be creative with your blog!
